They echo in the connective tissue, fascia, as it spirals around muscle, bone and memory. They are not symptoms but living signals of the bodies memory. Not broken pieces, but coherent patterns waiting to be touched, heard, rewoven.Modern neuroscience and body-based clinical practice now recognize what many ancient movement traditions have long known: the body holds the memory of lived experience in its tissues. And fascia the continuous, sensory-rich network enveloping every structure in the body is one of the key mediums of that memory.Few have explored this interface between biology and biography with as much depth and clarity as Dr. Joeri Calsius, a Belgian clinical psychologist and osteopath whose work bridges scientific research, body psychotherapy and fascia-oriented therapy. His contributions illuminate a profound truth: that the body is not just involved in emotional experience, it is the field in which emotional experience unfolds.&nbsp;Fascia as emotional ArchitectureFascia has often been overlooked in anatomy. Once thought of as mere packing material, we now understand it to be a living, dynamic network of collagen and ground substance that envelopes and interpenetrates muscle, bone, organ and nerve. According to Carla Stecco (2011), fascia is structurally varied but functionally unified: it responds to pressure, movement, tension and what’s crucial: internal states.The Fascia Research Group at Ulm University, led by Dr. Robert Schleip, has shown that fascia is densely innervated with sensory receptors, especially interoceptors, which detect the physiological condition of the body. These include stretch receptors, mechanoreceptors and nociceptors making fascia not just a structural tissue, but a sensory organ.&nbsp;Dr. Joeri Calsius builds on this foundation with a clinical and philosophical depth that is rare. His 2019 paper, 'The Body as Perceptive Organ and Resonating Mind', explores the role of fascia in emotional resonance, suggesting that affective experience is not only processed in the nervous system, but also structured somatically through fascial patterns.&nbsp;Trauma, Interoception, and Somatic MemoryIn trauma the system becomes overwhelmed. Energy is not discharged, movement is aborted, expression is inhibited. The body, especially its fascia remembers.&nbsp;Calsius’ research intersects deeply with the work of Stephen Porges (Polyvagal Theory) and Bessel van der Kolk, both of whom emphasize that trauma is not just an event, but a state, a physiological configuration marked by disconnection from the body, from others and from safe expression.Fascia plays a central role in this configuration. When the body is unable to escape or resolve a threatening situation, myofibroblasts in the fascia may contract and maintain tension long after the event is over. This has been demonstrated in studies by Schleip and colleagues, where fascial tonicity and densification are linked to stress exposure and emotional suppression.&nbsp;Clinical Application: The Body as Resonating MindIn his therapeutic work, Calsius emphasizes the body as a co-perceiving subject rather than just an object to be fixed. This aligns with emerging fields in embodied cognition and interpersonal neurobiology, where the body is understood as an intelligent interface that 'thinks,' 'remembers,' and 'feels' in ways that precede verbal language.&nbsp;The Reichian LineageCalsius’ work carries the subtle yet unmistakable imprint of Wilhelm Reich, whose influence can be traced in his focus on body armoring, energetic flow and somatic patterning.&nbsp;Reich, a student of Freud (but they fell out with each other) turned body mystic, posited that emotional trauma is stored in chronic muscular contraction. He established a theory that prefigured both somatic psychology and fascia science.&nbsp;Toward a Somatic Future of Psychology&nbsp;The implications of Calsius’ work are vast. Psychology can no longer afford to treat the body as peripheral.
